Originally from Boston, Austin Hsieh is a writer-director who first got his start in storytelling as a freelance photographer for various media outlets including The Boston Globe. He graduated with a BA from Tufts University and King’s College London and an MFA in Film Directing and Screenwriting from Columbia University. With a tone of wonder and charm that aims at comedies that encourages smiling as opposed to laughing, his films have premiered and won in competition at numerous international film festivals, including Oscar-Qualifying festivals Austin Film Festival, RiverRun International Film festivals, and many more. Most recently, he wrote and directed High Strung, a Portuguese-English film, and When the Sun Bleeds, a USA-Icelandic co-production.
Besides writing and directing, he has contributed to projects that have screened at Cannes Film Festival, SXSW, won the Kodak Cinematography Award, and just finished editing upcoming indie feature Bleeding. He currently works in post for season one of Netflix’s The Abandons.
